Leading this darker tone is the principal villain, Lilith. Lilith is one of the daughters of Mephisto and is one of the Great Evils and is referred to as the Mother of Sanctuary, the place where the Diablo series takes place. Instead of previous games that was a slow buildup to the main villain behind all the evil that exists in The world Blizzard introduced Lilith up front from the very first cutscene.

While her true motives aren't clear at first, her presence is instantly felt and was done deliberately so by the developers.
"By being asked to decode the story of what's going on and her effect on the world, you get to learn about her motives," said game director Joe Shely. "You can understand what she's trying for and you get to get more connected to her . And maybe there's even a little hint of doubt there. you're thinking: watch Star Wars and go like Vader. Vader did have a point. I believe that the idea of being able to spend more time the villains of the galaxy means that it's a much more satisfying conclusion as you go through the story, as you go through it."
